Nambiti Private Game Reserve, a ‘Big Five’ reserve, is well situated in a Malaria Free region of Kwa-Zulu Natal, approximately 3 hours drive from Durban and 4 hours from Johannesburg. The reserve is only 25 kilometres outside of Ladysmith and less than an hour’s drive to the Drakensberg mountains, a world heritage site.

Nambiti was started in 1999, from what was originally a cattle and maize farming area. After the farms were acquired, the removal of internal fencing and old buildings started as well as the outer game-fencing of the reserve which had to be completed. Alien vegetation had to be removed -  which is an ongoing exercise and finally the delicate task of re-introducing wildlife could take place.

Nambiti covers an area of 22 000 acres and is the only reserve in the area that is home to the ‘Big 5”. It also hosts 40 other species of game including, amongst others cheetah, giraffe, hippo, hyena, impala, eland and zebra and the bird life is prolific with several rare bird species found in the ravine bush alongside the river. The vegetation and landscape is beautiful and diverse and boasts incredible biodiversity, including savannah, thornveld, riverine bush, grasslands and acacia trees

The reserve is a private initiative and as such is driven by passionate, committed people with a deep love and respect for their natural heritage and a dedication to preserving and regenerating the wildlife and ecosystems, through partnerships with neighboring communities and conservationists. The local community also has a real stake in the Reserve and there are successful development programmes in place whereby the reserve not only offers visitors excellent game viewing experiences but both benefits and enriches the local people and makes meaningful contributions to conservation.

The reserve has a number of superb lodges which have either been newly built or renovated from existing farmhouses – there is a choice of nine luxurious safari lodges and one tented camp which can cater for family getaways, couples, weddings and corporate functions offering a selection of comfortable accommodation, fine cuisine, breathtaking landscapes, skilled and experiences guides and a rich diversity of wildlife and floria.

Nambiti offers visitors endless opportunities – superb game drives, guided bush walks, and magnificent stargazing by night. The Sundays River offers excellent Yellowtail fishing and there are a number of dams within the reserve that are well stocked with various fish species.

The area around Nambiti is rich in South African history with several battles of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars taking place on land surrounding the reserve. The world renowned battlefields Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift and also that of Ladysmith and Elandslaagte are all in the immediate vicinity of the reserve. There are numerous memorial sites including one at the entrance to the reserve which honors the Boer and English troops who lost their lives in the Battle of Elandslaagte. The hospital still stands and is within the reserve’s borders. Other historical attractions close by, in Ladysmith, include the Town Hall Museum, Siege Museum and Statue of Ghandi.
Less than an hour’s drive from Nambiti, the Drakensberg Mountains are a magnificent World Heritage site and extraordinarily beautiful. There are numerous activity options available here, including hiking, quad biking, 4 x 4 Trails, canopy tours, horse riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, fly fishing and white water rafting.

While winter is the best time of year for viewing wildlife – the area benefits from great weather all year round and after the heat of a summer day, thunderstorms in the late afternoon are both common and a quintessential part of the bush experience.
